On September 26th, the School District of Pickens County officially broke ground on Gateway to Innovation (G2i) — a bold, future-focused Career & Technical Education campus at the former Pickens Middle School. The campus has been renamed the Dr. Mendel Stewart Campus and will open in January 2027.
G2i will be a vibrant hub where students across Pickens County can explore, innovate, and gain real-world skills:
Grades 3–7: Project-based learning experiences that spark curiosity and connect classroom learning to the real world.
Grades 8–9: Pathway exploration in fields like AI, construction, biomedical sciences, and drones.
Grades 8–12: Advanced CTE programs aligned with high-wage, high-demand careers, with opportunities to earn credentials in as little as two years.
And G2i doesn’t stop there—
Affordable, on-site childcare for SDPC employees.
Evening workforce development programs through partnerships with Tri-County Technical College.
“Today marks more than the start of a building—it is the beginning of a story that will echo for generations,” said Tim Johnson, Director of G2i. “Gateway to Innovation represents opportunity, hope, and transformation for every student who walks through its doors.”
This project is possible thanks to the vision of SDPC leadership, the support of the SDPC Board of Trustees, the work of Triangle Construction and Goodwyn Mills Cawood, and the dedication of our business and community partners.
By naming the campus in honor of Dr. Mendel Stewart, we carry forward the legacy of a leader whose name is synonymous with service, integrity, and vision. His impact will continue to shape the lives of students for generations to come.
Stay tuned here as we share updates, stories, and milestones on the journey to January 2027. Welcome to the official Facebook page of Gateway to Innovation!
