Supt. Succession Plan Announced

Date: June 9, 2026

The School District of Pickens County Board of Trustees has announced that Superintendent Dr. Danny Merck will conclude his service as Superintendent at the end of the 2026-2027 school year.

Dr. Merck recently informed the Board of his plans, providing time for a thoughtful and well-planned transition. Following a called meeting on June 9, the Board released an official letter to the community sharing the news and outlining next steps.

Dr. Merck's journey in education spans more than three decades. Beginning as a classroom teacher and coach, he grew into a career that took him through principal roles at three high schools, assistant superintendent, and ultimately superintendent of the district he has called home throughout his career. His 13 years of leadership have shaped the lives of thousands of students and families across Pickens County.

Under his leadership, SDPC reached its highest graduation rate in history, expanded career and academic readiness programs, cultivated a nationally recognized global partnership with the University of Oulu in Finland, and built a culture of trust and service that has earned recognition from peers and organizations across South Carolina and beyond.

Reflecting on his years of service, Dr. Merck said: "Serving as superintendent of the School District of Pickens County has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. I have been blessed, and I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me, the relationships formed, and the work we accomplished together. Though I will be concluding my service in this role, my belief in this district, its future, and the people we serve remains unwavering."

Board of Trustees Chairman Randy Robinson shared: "Dr. Merck has been a steady and inspiring force for our schools. His leadership strengthened our academic programs and positioned our district for continued success. We are profoundly grateful for the successful culture he has established for our students and staff."

The Board of Trustees will launch a superintendent search in the near future. The process will be guided by the district's Innovate ’28 Strategic Plan and will include stakeholder engagement across the Pickens County community. The goal is to identify a leader who shares the values of this community: someone who puts people first, embraces innovation, supports educators, and is committed to student success.

Additional details will be shared as the search process moves forward. The Board remains committed to keeping students, families, staff, and the community informed throughout this transition.
